Dove Academy’s Lunch/Food Policy

2008-2009

Please review Dove Academy’s complete Lunch/Food Policy in the Academy’s 2007-2008 Student-Parent Handbook. Below is a summary of Dove Academy’s Lunch/Food Policy for your quick reference:

BREAKFAST:

  • Please provide your child with a healthy breakfast before he or she comes to school every morning. Studies show that a nutritious breakfast improves our ability to concentrate in the morning (we all know how hard it is to think on an empty stomach!)

SNACK:

  • Students are permitted to bring a healthy snack (i.e. a piece of fruit, crackers, carrot sticks, granola bar, etc…). See your child’s Classroom Teacher for their procedure regarding Snacks.

LUNCH:

  • Dove Academy does not have a lunch program. Every student must bring their lunch to school every day. Students must bring their lunch to school when they arrive for class (lunches should not be delivered for any of the students after arrival).
  • When a child is not regularly provided with a lunch, this is a form of neglect and we are required as public school officials to report all forms of neglect and abuse to the proper authorities.
  • If you do not make your child’s lunch, please check their lunch everyday to be sure they have packed appropriate items
  • All students are strongly encouraged to bring a nutritious lunch (most students enjoy a simple lunch including a sandwich, fruit, and a juice).
  • Students are not permitted to drink pop or any other carbonated beverage at school
  • Glass containers are not permitted for safety reasons. Aluminum cans are also discouraged because of sharp edges that could injure students.
  • We are not able to heat or refrigerate any lunch items for students. Please pack their lunch only with items that do NOT have to be heated or refrigerated.
  • Be sure to provide your child with the utensils they need to consume their food items (i.e. fork, spoon, napkin). NO STUDENT IS PERMITTED TO BRING ANY FORM OF KNIFE. When forks and spoons are necessary, the Academy encourages parents to provide their child with disposable forks and spoons (to prevent more expensive items from being lost or thrown away).

LUNCH CONTAINERS:

  • Students must bring Snacks and Lunches in an appropriate container (i.e. Lunchbox or lunch bag). Food items should not be packed loosely in book bags or carried separately to class by the student.
  • All Lunch Containers must include the child’s first and last name written neatly in permanent marker. Keep in mind many of our students have the same lunch container so we want your child’s to be easily identifiable.

SWAPPING AND STEALING:

  • Students are not permitted to take items out of each other’s lunch containers or demand that food items be given to them by other students.
  • Students are encouraged to eat and drink only the items that were provided by their parent/guardian for safety reasons.

GUM AND CANDY:

  • Students are NOT permitted to chew, suck on, or eat gum or candy at school. These items should be left at home. If a student is observed with any of these items at school, the student will be asked to throw the item away.
  • Please be sure your child is not chewing gum or eating candy when he/she reports to class each morning
