This is just a few interesting facts about our school...
Since August of 1997, Dove Academy of Detroit has been committed to providing choice in public education serving approximately 465 students distributed between grades Kindergarten through sixth grade. Dove Academy is a public school academy authorized by Oakland University and managed by Schoolhouse Services and Staffing. The Academy has earned full membership and accreditation status with the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA) since April of 2001. NCA accredits colleges and schools based on academic and institutional standards and criteria. The staff of the Academy is dedicated to continuous improvement through strategic planning.
The belief that every learner is unique is the underlying foundation of the educational program. In order to meet each student’s particular learning needs, teachers take into consideration the individual needs of each student and plan lessons that use a variety of instructional strategies and materials. The goal is to ensure that students develop the reading, writing, mathematical and communication skills that are the foundation of more advanced learning. The Academy provides a high quality education which enables students to achieve mastery in all curricular areas. The curriculum reflects teaching approaches and learning activities that improve students’ abilities to inquire, analyze, and express themselves both critically and creatively. All students must meet essential skill requirements, designed by Dove Academy instructional staff, in order to be promoted to the next grade. These essential skills are based on the state of Michigan’s Grade Level Content Expectations and the Michigan Curriculum Framework.
All students have the opportunity to learn the core curriculum. The core academic subjects of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies as well as special classes in Art, Music, Library, Technology (grades 1-6), Physical Education and Health, are key components of the educational program for all students. The basic educational program is combined with a safe and orderly learning environment and a continuous Character Education program to form a well-rounded Elementary Education for Dove Academy students. In addition, compensatory services are provided by a support staff of four full-time certified teachers for students that qualify for this form of assistance. The Academy features a full time Special Education teacher and contracts Speech and Language Therapists, Social Workers, and Education Psychologists to accommodate the individual needs of the students. In 2005-2006, Dove Academy facilitated After School Tutoring Program (for grades 3-6) and Summer School Program (for grades K-6) to provide additional learning opportunities for students not meeting grade level expectations.
100% of Dove Academy’s Teachers and Administrators meet the state of Michigan’s and the North Central Association’s requirements for certification. 100% of Dove Academy’s Teachers and Administrators are considered highly qualified under the provisions for professional qualifications provided by No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Education YES! grades are given by the Michigan Department of Education and reflect the Academy’s Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) results. The State of Michigan determined that the Academy’s Education YES! status was a B in 2005-2006. Dove Academy made AYP by achieving all AYP targets for grades 3-6. Dove Academy’s School Report Card can be found on the Michigan Department of Education’s website.
